The Oscars announced that movies released this year on streaming platforms (video-on-demand) will be eligible for its yearly awards. A first of its kind for the awards show.
Streaming services such as Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu provide the surest platform for viewing this year’s releases, with most people locked indoors. I will be taking you through some of the greatest releases this year. This should help you sort out the best from the rest!
Crip Camp
This is a movie about the popular San Francisco sit-in. This forced the Secretary of Health, Education and Wellness Joseph Califano to sign Section 504 of 1973’s Rehabilitation Act, and later, the ADA in the US.
Rewind
This is the autobiographic tale of Sasha Neulinger. It is one of the best movies of 2020 so far and tells the story of his troubled childhood. It further shows him being a playful and bright kid and his transformation into an unrecognizable person. The change was brought about by the constant sexual abuse he and his younger sister suffered from his uncles and cousins.
Vitalina Varela
This movie tells the story of Vitalina Varela who returns home to Portugal just a few days after the death of her estranged husband. She lived in the gloomy and dilapidated area of her town. Her story is one of sorrow, disconnection, and suffering.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always
This is a movie that puts a poignant face on a widely argued social topic. It is the tale of a pregnant 17-year-old girl, who travels to New York to get an abortion. She goes through financial difficulties, and uncomfortable visits to the doctor while suffering from constant indignities at the hands of men.
Bacurau
This movie tells of the story of the residents of the fictional Brazilian town of Bacurau. They wake one day to discover that their home is no longer on every GPS map and their cell phones no longer receive network services.
Saint Maud
Saint Maud is the tale of a young hospice nurse who believes that her God-sent mission is to Save the soul of a terminally ill patient.
Gretel & Hansel
This movie is a classic fairytale of the teenager Gretel who is thrown out of her mother’s house together with her younger brother, Hansel. Together they travelled the dark words while being plagued by hunger. They came across the home of a witch who was more than she seemed.
The Assistant
This is the first #MeToo movie. It shows the mundane day-to-day ways in which gender imbalance unfairness and abuse are part of workplace systems.
Weathering with you
Makoto Shinkai conquered the world in 2016 with his body-swap romance Your Name, a massive global hit. It’s not a surprise that he’s stayed in similar teen-fantasy-romance territory for his follow-up.
It is about a young runaway to Tokyo and the orphaned girl he falls in love with — a girl with the power to bring the sun out, however briefly. What is surprising is the mood that the movie carries. What makes it one of the best movies of 2020 is that is is a love story that staunchly refuses the idea that the young have to sacrifice themselves on the altar of the decisions of previous generations
