Critter: Little Weeny Critter

Little weeny critter

Just before drifting to sleep
My heavy eyes becomes alerted
Something catches my attention
Reminding me of
Your ardent love of tiny critters

An ant creeping into a little bored hole
Walking steadily
Like a free creature it will never be
Slithering like a snake
Unaware of enemies lurking around

Oblivious that when a mortal man sights it
Its lifespan gets cut in seconds
I move to squash this clueless critter
Seconds away, my leg refuses to move
My brain starts speaking

I think about the days I doubted your sanity
Your endless rants about their innocence
How the world of angry mortals act unjustly
Viewing them as important as a fart in a hurricane
As insignificant!

‘Hardworking that YOU ARE’, you said
‘Yet viewed as useless as a frozen shirt in the cold’
Your words will haunt me
If I end the life of the kind you hopelessly spare
The life of this helpless critter

The poem is about a critter or in this case, little insects, expressing an individual’s inability to squash an insect because of guilt.
