Hey, Guys! Did you miss us? Cause we missed you too! Especially, you that is about to scroll pass this post. Slow down there, bud. Relax, get a bowl of popcorn (or Garri) and enjoy today’s edition of Writer’s Interview. With us here today is none other than The Semilore Idowu
MediVoice: Can you get to know the Semilore Idowu?
I’m a third-year law student at OAU, currently figuring out a career path in law. I’m passionate about the intersection of law and technology, and I also enjoy corporate finance. Aside from law, I love writing – it completes me. I’m also an avid reader, enjoying fiction, non-fiction, and basically anything.
MediVoice: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
There wasn’t a particular moment; writing came naturally to me. I’ve always written, starting with poems in primary school and short stories that I was always eager to show to my older siblings. In secondary school, I was excellent in English essays and I was just the “go-to girl” for love letters, birthday poems and all of those things.
However, I took writing seriously during the strike in 2022, when I joined a writing challenge that led me to start my blog.
MediVoice: “The go-to-girl for love letters”, must have been nice to have been helping Cupid with spreading love. In case you still write love letters, I may know a friend that wants to write one. Emphasis on the fact that it is a friend and not me.
How did you feel when you took that first step and penned those first words?
I don’t exactly remember, but I recall how I felt after my first post on Medium. I was nervous and received a lot of engagement on my post, which made me a bit shy.
To think that shy girl who made her first post now has over 400 followers on Medium. I ever have a friend that’s like a die-hard fan of your work. You write so beautifully, btw. if you haven’t read her work or you’re not already following her, She goes by ” ‘Lóore Ìdòwú” on Medium
Speaking about fans, Who are the writers or storytellers that influenced you the most?
At the start of my writing career, Adichie was a major influence on my storytelling. Over the years, I’ve discovered other writers like Teju Cole who have also influenced my writing.
MediVoice: I should have known, deep calls to deep, GOATs called to GOATs. Talent calls to Talent. I’ve been dying to ask, Where do you draw inspiration for your stories or poems?
I write about things I imagine, see, and feel.
MediVoice: That’s such a writer thing to say. So, when Semilore Idowu is not writing or reading, what she is doing?
Honestly, not much. I just listen to good music and sometimes, I walk.
MediVoice: Ah, yes. Nothing does it like a good-ol-walk. A wise man I know once said ” Good music is good writing, and good writing is good music.” I may or may not be that wise man. Since we are saying wise words, Any parting words for our readers?
“For purposes of marketing, writers are designated as poets, novelists, or something else. But writing is about matchmaking, an attempt to marry sensations with apt words”.
~ Teju Cole
MediVoice:Beautifully put. I think I’m going to pin this on my wall. Thank you so much for your time, Seimilore. It was really a delight having you here. I hope we’d get to do this another time soon.
