It happens all the time, it might as well be routine. You both used to hang out all the time, but you moved, got into college, got a job, then all that’s left of the friendship is a name on your phone. Studies show that people who have meaningful friendships live longer and are on average, happier than most. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to ensure you keep friends you can trust and don’t end up like Scrooge.
Decide who you want to keep in touch with
You meet new people all the time, especially when you leave high school but that does not mean you have to desert old friends for new acquaintances. With most, you made lots of memories. And some, you barely felt a connection to. Always try to be actively involved in the lives of those that mean a lot to you.
Talk to them regularly
Try to stay up to date on what is happening in your friend’s life, and let them know about yours in return. Just knowing the little things about someone can take away the distance and make you feel like you’re still together. Most people prefer to text, but it does help to hear the person’s voice over the line. Figure out what works for you both and be consistent with it.
Make time to meet in person
Try to hang out in person once in a while. Do not let the internet fool you into thinking you know what is going on in your friend’s life. Of course distance and work can make this hard, but the very thought matters. Always try to make it to important events like birthdays and graduations, when your schedules allow for it.
Keep on top of your work
The older you get, the more busy you become. The more responsibilities you have. Yes, stay in touch, but don’t sacrifice your work. Do not be the one that stays up late chatting with friends and not studying, then waking up late and missing class.
Validate the friendship
When your friend needs emotional support, be ready to give it. Let them know you are always available to talk to. Let them know how much they mean to you, make them know you value the friendship. Remember important details, especially birthdays.
Most of these tips, we know already. But we prefer to use ‘I’m busy’ as an excuse. Not keeping in touch makes friends to drift apart. Friendship, in the end, is not about how you feel about someone. But how you feel when you are around someone. Be with people that make you happy.
