There’s No Money In Medicine!

There’s no money in medicine, because you wake up one morning, thinking of money, and reality blatantly tells you “nothing for you”. Ah!, the struggles 😭

Sadly, this might be your dilemma, even as a medical student. But is there really no money? Have we been fed lies all our lives?

Arguably, this is a personal question, and it requires a subjective answer, so here’s my take on it 👇

In lieu of hope for financial fulfilment in future, the working conditions that surround you (working 24/7 with no remuneration that’s worth the stress, emphasis on ‘the stress’), often requires a distress call – mayday.

Frequently, you hear rants of how there’s money especially amongst the top gees in the profession. However, have you ever wondered how they got there (the time, effort, and so on)? A glance at us in the lower cadre, begets the question of ‘what is our fate?’ (some say it is too late). I think what most people want is not readily explored in medicine. That comfortable work-life balance is not there, particularly in the early years of training and residency.

Inspite of the financial constraints, there’s no motivation to even keep working. There are few equipment in place when needed, and this has resulted in ‘improvisation’ in clinical practice (‘Person gats find way’). It has become a case of ‘I know what to do, but I don’t have the resources to do them’. In a nutshell, medical practice here in Nigeria is definitely not the best, as all we do here is just an act of service to humanity.

Finally, is there really no money in medicine? Or it’s just here in Nigeria that we are affected? Is there even hope in those countries where people ‘Japa’ to?

What if it is a global issue? Perhaps, it is just me that feels this way. Nonetheless, drop your thoughts about this in the comment section!
