The Obafemi Awolowo University Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA) came second overall at the Doctor Plus 6.0 event. The result was based on their combined debate and pitch competition performance. The summit was held on Monday, May 12, 2025, at NACETEM Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The theme was “The Future of Medicine: Artificial Intelligence and Beyond.”
Welcome Words and Inspiring Talks
The event began with an opening speech by Professor Salako, the Dean of Clinical Sciences. He welcomed participants and encouraged students to explore new skills, especially in technology and artificial intelligence. Ayobami Miracle Olajuyigbe, the IFUMSA President, also spoke. He emphasised the importance of preparing for a future where medicine and technology work together.
During the event, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Babatope Kolawole, stressed how AI is already saving lives in hospitals and urged students to embrace AI skills as part of their training.
Exploring AI Through Keynote Speeches, Abstracts, and Panel Sessions
In the keynote session, Dr. Jesse Benedict spoke virtually on how AI helps reduce workload and improve record-keeping. Ayooluwa Oyewo, a software engineer, explained how smart machines could make hospitals work faster and more efficiently. Both speakers encouraged students to see technology as a tool for better healthcare delivery.
The summit featured an abstract presentation session with three students. Toluwase Ogundipe, from IFUMSA, spoke on ‘Artificial Intelligence Vaccination.’ Abdulbasit Opeyemi, from LAUMSA (Ladoke Akintola University Medical Students Association), discussed ‘AI Chatbots Vs YouTube Learning: Which Medium is More Effective for Medical Education.’ Kabiawu Yetunde, also from IFUMSA, discussed ‘Assessing Medical Students’ Perspective on the Use and Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine.’ All three students received certificates and souvenirs for their presentations.
IFUMSA Vice President Funmi Sopade moderated the first panel session. The panellists, Ayotunde Oni, Abdulquddus Ajibade, and Obakoyowa Ayobami, spoke about the benefits of learning AI and reassured students that AI will assist doctors, not replace them.

The second panel session focused on AI and mental health. Nwodo Chidinma moderated it. Panellists included Dr. Ayinde Ayoyinka, a senior registrar in psychiatry; Elizabeth Johnson; and Mosinmiloluwa Motajo. They explained how AI can support mental health care and improve patient outcomes.
Debate, Pitch, and IFUMSA’s Big Win
The summit also featured a British Parliamentary Debate. The motion was: “This House Supports Restructuring Medical Education to Focus More on Artificial Intelligence Literacy and Less on Conventional Diagnostic Reasoning.” Students from IFUMSA, UMMSA (University of Medical Sciences, Ondo), ILUMSA (Ilorin Medical Students Association), and OSUMSA (Osun State University Medical Student Association) competed, with the participating schools making compelling arguments on both sides of the motion.
After the debate, student innovators presented their projects in a pitch competition. The innovations included Klinic AI (an AI-powered triage assistant), Clean Pal (an addiction recovery app), and Catch Cancer Young (CCY) (an AI-based early skin cancer detection tool). The presentations focused on how AI can solve real health challenges.
At the close of the event, the combined scores from the debate and pitch competitions were announced. ILUMSA came first. IFUMSA secured second place. UMMSA placed third.
The event ended with applause and excitement. Students left the venue with more knowledge about how AI is shaping medicine. The summit gave medical students a chance to engage with the future of medicine, showcase their ideas, and learn from experts in the field. One thing is clear — the world is moving fast towards an AI-driven future, and IFUMSA doctors are not snoozing on it. Doctor Plus 6.0 stands as proof that IFE doctors are ready to lead the charge.
