6 Exciting Recommendations From Friends

The genre of music and type of artist a person listens to can offer some insight into what goes on in their heads. This is why recommendations from friends are interesting. They either validate an opinion you’ve always had about your friend or they help you learn something new. It’s also interesting to know what they think you’d like and why they think you’d like it. A few days ago, I was going through my library and I was trying to see if I could recall how I discovered some songs on there. A lot of them, I discovered myself. Some of them were Spotify and YouTube recommendations. A significant number of them were also recommendations from friends.

So today, I’m going to tell you about the recommendations from friends that I absolutely loved and you might love them too. Some of them even turned into new obsessions. So without further ado, let’s get into it.

1. Car Radio – twenty one pilots

When I was just starting to get into twenty one pilots, I was really confused. They started making music all the way back in 2009 and I wasn’t sure where to start with their catalogue. One of my friends decided to help me out and she recommended “Car Radio”, a song from their album “Vessel”. “Car Radio” is a song that describes how menacing silence can be for anybody who’s a victim of intrusive thoughts and just how far our mind will go in the absence of a distraction like music. It’s rap but also, not quite. This is a recommendation I’m eternally grateful for, so I’ve decided to share it with you. Thank you, Nimi.

2. Light On – Maggie Rogers

You know when someone talks about a song so much that it wears you down? This was the case with this song. A friend of mine wouldn’t stop talking about it, so I decided to give it a listen. I opted for watching the live performance on YouTube and I was hooked. It was something in the simplicity of the song, of the artist, and of the performance. It was simply beautiful. 3. God’s Menu – Stray Kids

My first introduction to Stray Kids was a clip from the music video of this song and the aesthetics of the video got me completely hooked! Nobody does aesthetics better than the K-pop industry. If you’re looking for a K-pop group to stan apart from BTS, I definitely recommend this group and song. Thank you, Ayo.

4. Soft Universe – AURORA

I was randomly asked by a colleague if I listened to AURORA. When I answered no, he went on a dramatic rant on how AURORA was the bane of his existence so I decided to give her a listen. Listening to this made me feel like I was on psychedelics, something I’ve discovered is a normal AURORA listening experience for me. Every one of her other songs I’ve listened to has made me feel like I was on psychedelics, not like I know what being on psychedelics feels like. Thank you, Iyanu.

5. Alouette Gentile Alouette

This is a French nursery rhyme about body parts. The first time I heard this rhyme was when I was a kid, in a Tom and Jerry episode. I didn’t exactly know the words. It was very catchy and I liked it. I’d been singing this rhyme since then, albeit a little wrongly. I love nursery rhymes. I think they’re the peak and definition of poetry. Recently, a friend who’s aware of my love of nursery rhymes sent me a YouTube link to a version of this rhyme. I enjoyed it so much, it was on repeat for days after. Thank you, Wole.

6. Cell Block Tango – Chicago: The Musical

After introducing my friend to a number from Hamilton: The Musical, she proceeded to return the favour by telling me to listen to this song. She took my phone, went on YouTube and searched for the song right there and then and made me watch it, leaving me no choice in the matter. It was so enthralling, so gratifying, so delightful that I had to watch it a few more times. Everything about it was just (inserts chef’s kiss). “Cell Block Tango” is from the soundtrack of Chicago: The Musical, a musical released in 2002. I eventually went on to watch the entire musical and it’s a decision I don’t regret. Thank you, Joy.
