CAFFEINE, READING AND HEALTH

There’s a popular trend on campus, especially during times like this where you have to read to stupor (…When you be like “let’s kuku die there”), then you take the super OAU-students invented power drink combo of Coke + Nescafe, which is believed to activate the ‘shine Darlganon Jacking sequence’ in you so the night beomes day… You know better. I mean, this is OAU after all, there’s always something to rush us… Just that different things are capable of rushing people…Have I said anything? (winks).

Now, just as we are in pursuit of excellent grades, let’s endeavour not to do this at the expense of our health, because it is said: “Your Health is your wealth” . We should rather abide in healthy study habits wherein a balance is created between our academics and our state of health.
There’s been a lot of beliefs about the coke + Nescafe concoction. Some believe it’s just a means to keeping awake… nothing more, others believe it has side effects ranging from insomnia, to mental drifts etcetera etcetera while some even believe it doesn’t work for everyone. What to believe is just what I pondered about until I found a recent development by the Coca Cola company in Thailand formally launching a product which legally combines Coca Cola and coffee.

News has it that Thailand has become the latest country to see the launch of Coca-Cola Plus Coffee after Vietnam, Australia and Japan. The sparkling coffee drink is made from Robusta coffee and is targeting at individuals looking for a wake-me-up drink especially in the afternoon.
Available in 7-Eleven in June 2018 at a price of THB 15, this drink will be sold in other retailers from August 2018.

I know this sounds like good news to some. Well, I don’t think it’s too good a news because of the following facts:
• There are approximately 10 teaspoons of added sugar in a single can of Coca cola. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommend consuming no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar daily, meaning drinking just one serving of cola a day could take us well above these guidelines.

• Coca-Cola itself is ‘comparable to heroin’ in how it stimulates the brain’s reward and pleasure centers, inducing high levels of insulin and dopamin and thus suppressing the detection of the high sugar levels and make you want to take more. How much more adding coffee to it?
• many more effects are summarized in the diagram

Healthier methods:
• A properly planned schedule is essential to successful. Have a personal schedule of the day and follow it strictly. With this, you can have up to 6 hours of comfortable sleep and still read at maximum assimilation and speed.
• To read at least 4-5 hours at night, eat light meals as dinner.
• Eat fruits at least 3 times a week to maintain the vitality.
• instead of carbonated drinks, ciltivate the habit of drinking more of clean water
• Persistent long reading hours could induce varicosity, so a little exercise daily is great.
….until same time next week pals. Keep on the fitness.
