Here is a throw back to when we played fashion judges.
I welcome you to the fashion column this week, where I’m playing fashion judge. Well, critique is the more appropriate term, but fashion judge sounds more empowering, and yeah! I’d like you to be a judge as well. So, you might as well go ahead and get in the judgy mood.
The case we shall be presiding over has to do with the 93rd annual academy awards a.k.a. the Oscars, which took place at the Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on the 25th of April 2021. We aim to compare the night’s red carpet looks of a few selected celebrities with their last Oscar appearance and ultimately decide whether it was a fashion step-up or step-down. Are you ready? Let’s get it!
- Regina king
From the jewel-encrusted powder pink Versace and sleek hairdo in 2020 to the crystal-encrusted sky blue Louis Vuitton and classy Bob in 2021. Regina King went from dreamy to dreamier and is absolutely flawless in both looks. Gosh, it’s so hard to choose a favourite. We just started the judging, and it’s already such a difficult job. I’m more partial to pink though, because I’m a sucker for anything pink. It’s definitely not a step-down but is it a step-up? You, be the judge!
2. Daniel Kaluuya
The Judas and the black messiah actor won his first Oscar wearing all black and accessorising with a necklace of Cartier diamonds, a watch and a pavé pinky ring. Oh, how I love a man who knows how to accessorise! This look was definitely a step-up from the mustard velvet suit he wore back in 2018. I’m sure you agree. Even the pose is a step-up.
3. Zendaya
Zendaya can do no wrong in my eyes. I stan this girl, and she kills it every time on the red carpet. Her last appearance at the academy awards was in 2018, where she looked like an incredibly stunning Greek goddess, Greek chic as I like to call it, and in 2021, she looked good in yellow with long hair and statement neckpieces. But hey, I’m here for greek chic!
4. Angela Basset
This Wakanda queen is such a beautiful gift on the red carpet, and I mean it literally too! In 2019 she was a presenter with a pink bow, and in 2021, she was also presenter but with a red bow, and whether she comes with a pink or red bow, she’s glamorous. I’m going with the pink though because again, it’s pink! Permit my partiality. However, I can’t say this was a step-down because she looks great in red too.
5. Amanda Seyfried
At her last appearance on the Oscars red carpet in 2013, she looked like an ice queen, like a live-action Elsa from Frozen, but she most definitely let it go in 2021, looking the exact opposite in flaming red, an absolute vision is what I call it so yeah she definitely stepped up her game.
My favourite look of the night was none other than Oscar newbie H.E.R. I mean she’s such a beaut! It’s the hair, no it’s the specs, no it’s the beaded royal blue! No, it’s most definitely everything for me.
I hope I did justice to the comparisons above. I feel like I might have been a bit partial because there are no step-downs in sight. Feel free to let me know your judgements in the comments.
