KOBE BRYANT’S DEATH: The 41-year-old NBA basketball player and one of the greatest basketball players of all time died in a helicopter crash, alongside his 13-year-old daughter and seven others on the 26th of January. The helicopter went down “in a remote field” in Calabasas, Calif. around 10 a.m. Kobe is survived by his wife Vanessa Laine Bryant. They had four children together.
MANCHESTER UNITED SIGNS ODION IGHALO: Odion Ighalo will become the first Nigerian to play for Manchester United after completing a £3m loan move from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua. Ighalo made his debut for the Nigeria National team in 2015, he represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA world cup in Russia and was the highest goal scorer at the 2019 AFCON. The Nigerian international played in England between 2014 and 2017 making 99 appearances for Watford and scoring 39 goals.
MANCHESTER CITY RECEIVES BAN BY UEFA: Manchester City has been banned from playing in the UEFA Champions League for the next two seasons. The club had been under investigation by UEFA over alleged breaches of financial transparency rules and the decision was announced on 15 February 2020. Aside from the ban, the club is expected to pay a fine of €30 million. However, the English clubs has said it intends to appeal the decision to the Lausanne-Based court of Arbitration for sports.
HAALAND KEEPS SCORING: Erling Haaland became the first player in the Bundesliga history to score 7 goals in his first 3 appearances. He has scored with each of his first 7 shots on target. He made his debut in a match against Augsburg and made an immediate impact, scoring 3 goals within 23 minutes. The Norwegian International joined Borussia Dortmund from Austrian side FC Salzburg for a fee around €20 million. He now has a total of 9 goals in 6 appearances for the German club.
BARCELONA SACKS VALVERDE: Barcelona announced the sack of former manager Ernesto Valverde and announced the former Real Betis manager Quique Setien as the new coach. Barcelona parted ways with Valverde after a disappointing run of form with the club and also after failing to win the UEFA Champions League, giving up a 4-1 and 3-0 first leg wins to Roma and Liverpool in the quarter-finals in 2018 and semifinal in 2019 respectively.
