Community Outreach: IHAC Takes Wholesome Health To Ikire

In keeping with tradition, the Oloyede Kehinde-led IFUMSA Health Awareness Club (IHAC) administration, held its community outreach last Saturday in Ikire. Ikire, a well-known town in Osun State, is a 1-hour drive from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

With an outreach team comprised of over 60 medical & dental students, pharmacy students, perioperative nurses, doctors and surgeons, the set up began at past 9am when the team arrived at Akire Palace.

They were warmly welcomed by the hospitable people of the town and the event began in earnest by 10am.

The club also invited Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN), a nationwide healthcare organisation with a branch in Osogbo. Delegates sent by the healthcare organization gave an enlightening lecture on breast and cervical cancer (the two predominant types of cancer found in women of reproductive age) to the women in attendance. The organization also carried out free cervical screening for those that showed interest.

Over 100 indigenes of the community benefited from the free medical check-ups, surgical procedures and medical consultations.

Furthermore, the team carried out medical check-ups that covered a wide range of health services including oral checkups, blood pressure checks, malaria rapid diagnostic tests, urinalysis, blood sugar, hepatitis B screening and HIV screening amongst others.

Free consultations, referrals as well as surgeries were also provided to those that required them. The free surgical procedures such as hernia repair and hydrocelectomy were carried out on not less than 11 patients.

Our representatives were at the event alongside the TVC media team and representatives from the Punch Newspaper. A video coverage of the outreach has also been featured on TVC.

Since her inception in 2012, IHAC has been providing and enhancing wholesome health for the general public through massive health campaigns, school outreaches, symposiums and mega community outreaches.

The goal of the annual community medical outreach stems from the need to provide access to healthcare & health education which members of the community may ordinarily not have access to.

We commend the effectiveness of this year’s outreach and wish IHAC well in their future health campaigns.
