MediVoice readersđź¤, today is another day to get to meet a personality, this time, to meet a beautiful lady. On this week’s edition of personality of the week, we have here Sekinat from the Tenacious class.
Sekinat, can you tell us a little about yourself?
Hi, I’m Sekinat Oladeji, a writer and part four medical student. I dabble in photography and some other nameless art forms.
My next question is probably the most clichĂ© question Medical students get but I’ll ask anyway. What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
I’m not sure I was inspired. It was available and it seemed doable. Of course, I started having second thoughts about the latter soon after I saw Keith Moore.
In a poem verse, how would you describe your preclinical experience?
When the fire seared my tongue
And the words danced before my eyes
When the sun melted my skin
And the rain tasted like salt
Amidst it all,
Were palms with rail lines
Tracks for my mind and madness
And maybe
It took me two years and a prayer
But eventually came the thought
This, too, is a kind of living
Is it not?
Let me say; this interviewer is in love with your literary work. It’s why I had to make you do a poem. How has writing contributed to your medical journey?
Thank you, it warms my heart to hear this! ❤️
Writing kept me grounded through my preclinical journey. It was something outside of school that I desperately needed. It’s my craft and an outlet.
Whenever it got too hard, I wrote funny and unhinged pieces to reflect my mental state. And it was always nice to watch other medical students resonate with my rants.
What’s the most memorable or challenging “ick” question you’ve encountered as a medical student?
Only three courses?!
This or that: Group sessions or solo learning?
If I were still green, I’d have gone for that in a flash. But each one serves its purpose. It turns out that group sessions are crucial to a medical student’s success. If that weren’t the case, it would be solo learning for sure.
If you could change one thing in IFUMSA, what would it be?
Nothing that I can think of.
Would you rather have a photographic memory for medical textbooks or be able to learn any new skill in one day?
I’d rather be able to learn a new skill in one day. There’s so much I want to learn. Plus I’m not sure a photographic memory would be all that anyway, especially if it’s only for medical textbooks.
What specialty or area of medicine interests you most, and why?
I loved children before I chose medicine, so I parroted pediatrics everytime I was asked this question. I’m no longer sure but the class I’m starting soon is a good place to find out.
How do you prioritize self-care during intense study periods?
Ha, I don’t. More honestly, I think it was the walks. I take walks everyday when school is in session, with or without music. It’s another grounding mechanism. I employ it a lot when things get intense too, I even take multiple walks per day sometimes.
What advice would you give to your first-year self, now that you’re about to enter clinicals?
I assume you mean the first pre-clinical year, so:
“Don’t panic so much. And why panic if you aren’t going to do anything about it anyway?”
Thank you so much Sekinat, I myself enjoyed every bit of this.
Readers! We’ve met Sekinatđź¤
